The Manassas Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI) will start its 8th year on Wednesday, September 8th and invites any senior citizen to come to the semi-annual Sip and Socialize at 1:00 pm at Manassas St. Thomas United Methodist Church, 8899 Sudley Road. If you are a senior and want to keep your mind active by learning while meeting new people and having fun, LLI is for you. The mission of LLI is to provide quality, affordable educational opportunities in a supportive environment for adults 50 years of age or older.

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) has confirmed the first case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) in a horse this year. The horse, an 18-month-old mustang female from Suffolk, was euthanized July 26 because of the severity of her symptoms – extreme weakness and ataxia, the inability to coordinate voluntary muscle movements, unsteady movements and staggering gait. The horse received an initial vaccination and a booster in the fall of 2009, as well as a booster in May of 2010.

Prince William County, Virginia . . . The 6th Annual Chocolate Challenge, an adult and youth chocolate dessert contest sponsored by BR Associates, will be held Sunday, August 15, 2010 at the Prince William County Fair. The adult contest is open to any individual over 19; the youth contest is for 19 or younger.

Virginia Farmers’ Market Week begins this Sunday, August 1, and runs through August 7. Farmers’ Markets are great places for stories on agriculture (the state’s largest industry), buying local and what’s in season right now. We have 190 of them across Virginia, so most citizens have access to a market within minutes of their homes.
