Potomac Community Library turned 35 years old this year and will be celebrating this significant birthday throughout the entire month of September with programs to show our appreciation to our community. Programs range from our annual jazz concert series to the joys of making things with Sir Brix-a-Lot, the Lego Master.
On January 25, 1975, the weather was temperate and a large number turned out for the official dedication of the Potomac Community Library. Among the many who signed the library's guest book that day were Mr. and Mrs. Rosser Howard. Thirty-five years later, Mrs. Howard still works at Potomac, having retired once and come back. Ten years ago, in 2000 on the occasion of the library's 25th birthday, former Board Chair Kathleen Seefeldt signed the guest book. Come join us for one of our birthday celebrations in September, and sign that very same guestbook for posterity.
Every weekend in September will offer a way to celebrate with us. The festivities for the month begin on September 10th and continue through that weekend, when the Friends of the Potomac Community Library hold one of their fantastic book sales. From Friday through Sunday, the public is invited to come and find a bargain. The following weekend, on Saturday, September 18th, Have Blade, Will Travel will demonstrate the fine art of fencing, as well as help us celebrate Talk like a Pirate Day. The next day, Sunday, September 19th, we are pleased to present a violin/viola duo of
much renown, marcolivia. Marcolivia will play lovely music and refreshments will be served. The celebration weekends conclude on Saturday 9/25 and Sunday, 9/26. Saturday the Community Room will fill with thousands of Legos and Sir Brix-a-Lot will inspire fabulous creations from children and their parents. On Sunday, the Community Room will fill with music, not bricks, as we present our annual Jazz Concert. This year's group is Project Natale, playing several forms of jazz.
The birthday theme also pops up this month at our Third Thursday Thrillers book group, as the featured mystery this month is, appropriately enough, "Murder Takes the Cake", with a discussion followed by a potluck supper. For the teens there will be the opportunity to decorate cupcakes and learn decoupage, on Tuesday, September 21st and the 'tweens will "Chalk it Up" with birthday messages made with homemade chalk on Monday, September 27th.
Check the website or our Calendar of Events for details regarding tickets, registration, age limits and other details for these celebrations. We look forward to celebrating 35years of service to the community with you.
