Summer Band Camp Finishes on a High Note
Ninety Three students from Prince William County enjoyed the fruits of Summer Band Camp sponsored by Prince William County and Music and Arts. Thirteen Camp Directors provided experienced instruction in Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Contra Alto Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Bar Saxophone, Trumpet, French horn, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba and Percussion instruments. Most of the Camp Directors are current Band Directors from area middle and high schools. Two college music majors, one private instructor and one member of the U.S. Navy Band were included in the mix.
On the first day of camp students auditioned for the Cadet and Concert bands. Each student then learned about eight songs within a particular section or chamber group, for example percussion. Every day included two breaks, lunch and some physical activity, except on concert day.
Students wore their camp T-shirt on the final day for the concert, held in the Benton Middle School gym. Families and friends enjoyed a variety of musical arrangements for Cadet and Concert level groups, highlighted by individual chamber group performances. Students enjoyed the sweet sounds of the Prince William County Music Camp.
A Music Technology Camp is planned for August 13th to 17th at the cost of $100.00. Rising 7th, 8th and 9th grade students can register for morning or afternoon sessions and will take place at Woodbridge Senior High School Music Technology Lab.
Registration is due by August 10, 2007. For questions contact Shannon Gunn at gunnsr@pwcs.edu.
