This year marks the 6th Annual Holy Trinity Catholic Church picnic at the Benedictine Monastery in Bristow, VA. Father Francis Peffley, Pastor of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Gainesville, VA is delighted to see a third of the 2,000 registered family members participating in this annual event. The fun -filled event included face-painting, a dunk booth, a shave-iced and pop-corn booth, pony rides for little children, cake walks contest, and swimming for all ages.
David Mills, Deputy Grand Knight and Programs Chairman of the Knights of Columbus, Council 12982 described the event as a wholesome family entertainment. The event was primarily organized by volunteers. The Knights for instance organized the event and manned the charcoal grills; the Youth Ministry Group was in charge of organizing the face painting table; the Moms Group sold the event tickets; the Social Concerns Committee Group served the meals. In addition, Jerry Kosa's Boys Scout Troop Number 581 was busy directing traffic. According to Jerry, Troop 581 is currently recruiting boys who are at least eleven years or have completed the 5th grade. He said the retention rate of the troop in phenomenal and looking forward to an exciting summer camp and volunteering service. For inquiries, he can be reached at 703-367-0573.
The highlights of the event included a skilled juggling act performed by Father Peffley; the juggling included bowling balls, lighted torches, and machetes which delighted and amazed toddlers, school-aged children, parents, grandparents, and guests. The other highlight was the arrival of the International Statue of Our Lady of Fatima which was displayed on the grounds of the Benedictine Monastery. The statue is sixty years old, made of hand-carved wood, and painted according to the memories of Lucia, one of the children Virgin Mary visited. According to Mike Taylor, representative of the Ambassador of Mary said the statue has been around the world including the communist countries like the former Soviet Union. The picnic concluded with excitement. The members of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church are looking forward to next year's annual picnic and wished to thank Bob Ashworth for his tireless effort in coordinating this successful event.
