Bull Run Public Library - Grand Reopening
Manassas, Virginia, June 16, 2007. The Bull Run Regional Library re-opened on June 11th after approximately two and one-half months of work on the heating and air conditioning systems. A Grand Reopening Celebration was held last Saturday, June 16, 2007 complete with entertainment, including music by a quartet called The Prince William Sound, a magic act by Captain Token, local fire fighters, face painting, and Civil War Re-enactors. Wanda Reese, a library patron who comes to Bull Run with her children, donated the many ribbons and rainbow colored balloons that arched the entry way and reading areas because she wants children to associate libraries as a fun place. She thought that this would be a good way for her to give back to the community. Two library staff members, Debbie Bruce and Diane Entremont assisted with the decorating prior to the festivities.
The library was also gearing up for their Summer Quest Reading Program called "Catch the Beat at Your Library" for children from toddlers to teens where they can participate in special programs involving music, dance, crafts and reading. Children can sign-up and receive a free coupon every week from a local sponsor and earn special incentives for reading 5, 15 and 25 books. There is also a teen program for 6th to 12th graders called "Wild Reads" where teens can participate in a cool after hours program and be entertained by two local bands who play "wild" music while teens, listen, dance, eat some good food or maybe find a book to chill with for the summer. Sue Llewellyn,
Supervisor of Children's Young Adult Services Librarian at the Bull Run library wants children and young adults to register early because the program fills up very quickly. In fact, last year the library registered more than 3,000 requests and while 14,000 registered within Prince William County.
Parents can sign-up at the Summer Quest desk beginning Monday, June 18, 2007. The teens can sign up at their web site at http://www.pwcgov.org/library or visit their local area library. According to Sue Llewellyn, the Bull Run Library depends on 54 teen volunteers to help with their Summer Quest Reading Program. They register the participants at a special desk and hand out the incentives. She said without their help it would be difficult to maintain the program. She thinks the teen volunteers are absolutely fantastic! They each work a two or three hour shift and agree to work eight out of the eleven weeks during the summer. They use those service hours for school, scouting, and/or church volunteer hours.
The coupon incentives vary from week to week. Many local sponsors are participating in giving away coupons. The Wild Reads Program designed for young adults provide incentive prices for reading 3, 6, 9 books. In addition, they receive a drawing ticket for 3, 6, and 9 books for a grand drawing scheduled in September 2007. Smaller gift cards have been donated by local vendors and at this time of printing, the prizes have yet to be determined by the Public Library system. These programs are available at all the 10 libraries in Prince William County including Gainesville and Nokesville. For a full detail of the summer programs, visit your local public libraries.
