Nokesville, VA ~ November 10, 2007. BristowEnews.com met with Devin Vaughn and Greg Taylor, event coordinator for the 1st Annual Cornhole Invitation fundraising event for the Girls' basketball team for the Brentsville High-School. The event took take place at the Fire Station No. 5 in Nokesville, VA and has attracted about 20-30 participants. The history of the game traces it roots back to California and the event spread throughout the Mid-West. Eventually the game achieved notoriety through Bengal's quarterback Carson Palmer who was an avid player of the game.
Cornhole tournaments abide by the preamble and rules of the American Cornhole Organization, http://www.americancornhole.org/cornhole-rules-game-length.shtml. The object of the game is to toss a 6 by 6 inch bag which weighing approximately one pound of hard corn feed. Each player gets four bags and are tossed to a Cornhole sanctioned board with a measurement of 47 1/2" x 23 1/2" rectangle with a 6 inch diameter hole which is centered 8 7/8"" from the top of the board to the center of the cornhole and 11 3/4" from each side edge to the center of the board.

Condensed Summary of the Game Rules:
The game can be played either as singles or doubles. For single play, each player competes against the other player. In addition, a single player must play from the left pitcher's box of the head board. In doubles, the players are partners against another team of two where each team pitches from each side of the board. For doubles, each player's partner is directly across from them in the opposite box at the other board. So each team has one player throwing from the left pitcher's box and one throwing from the right. Each player is assigned a pitcher's box and will be required to pitch from their box the entire game.
The pitching of the bag must not be outside of the pre-designated pitcher's box during the process of tossing the bag.
Scoring Format:
Traditional 21 Scoring - This is a negation or cancellation format where opposing players' frame points cancel one another out. Only those points that do not cancel out apply to the total overall score. For example: Red team scores 7 points in a frame and Blue team scores 9 points in the same frame. The difference is 2 (9-7=2). Blue team scores 2 points in that frame.
Frame Game Scoring - Unlike the negation process, Frame Game players are trying to accumulate as many points as possible over 13 complete frames. The perfect score, or maximum amount of points available, is 156 points, meaning a player would need to throw 52 of 52 cornholes. The player with the highest cumulative score at the end of 13 frames is declared the winner. Traditional 21 League Format (Recommended. Applies to Doubles and Singles)
Pitching Format:
The object of the game is simple ~ get the bags into the hole. The point system is pretty much straight forward: 3 points for bags in the hole and 1 point for bags on the board. Bags that fall off the board are referred to "Dirty Bags" and points are not counted. A "Stanker or Foul Bag" is any bag that contacted the court or the ground before coming to rest on the board surface.
So the next time you see a "Cornhole Invitational" check it out and you might get hooked on the game.
