23rd Annual Inter-Tribal Powwow

23rd Annual American Indian Inter-Tribal Cultural Powwow.

In observance of the Native American month this November, BristowEnews.com covered the 23rd Annual American Indian Inter-Tribal Cultural Organization (AIITC) Pow-wow held this year at the Benedictine Monastery in Bristow, Virginia. The event which was typically held in the month of June or July was the 1st year held in the early days of autumn.

According to Dana Padgett, AIITC Secretary about 100 different tribes participated in this regional powwow. Representatives from the Apaches, Cherokees, Hoh's, Shoshones, the Mohawks, Oneidas, Lakota's, Saponi's, and other countless other tribes participated with full regalia, powwow dancing, and singing. Among the performances held was the Grass Dance, which symbolically considered a healing dance was intended to nurse a sick child who was too frail to move. The Grass dance was performed by children and adults. The infamous War Dance was also performed by men and women in separate events. A sampling of Native American dishes and cuisines were provided to the general public. Arts and Crafts exhibits, Silent Auctions, and other activities were planned throughout the two-day events. The entertainments were provided by MacKenzie River for the Drums; Flute played by Ron Warren and Janice the Singer.

The intent of the powwow is to promote the American Inter-Tribal cultural affairs between American Indian Tribes and eventually spread to support education, scholarship grants, promote American Indian Culture to schools as well invite the general public to find out valuable information about the American Indian culture. The Benedictine Monastery has been generous in providing the grounds for the past several years and
