Marian H. McQuade
Founder, National
Grandparents Day
Celebrate National Grandparent's Day this Sunday September 9, 2007! In 1978, President Jimmy Carter proclaimed that National Grandparents Day would be celebrated the first Sunday after Labor Day, thanks to the efforts of Marion McQuade. The statute's preamble cites the day's purpose as: "to honor grandparents, to give grandparents and opportunity to show love for their children's children, and to help children become aware of the strength, information, and guidance older people can offer." See the National Grandparents Day web site: http://www.grandparents-day.com .
Marion is a housewife from Fayette County, West Virginia who championed the cause of lonely elderly in nursing homes. She hoped to persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage of their grandparents.
