Lieutenant Governor Bolling Speaks to Area Press after Last Week’s Election Announcement
Lieutenant Governor Bolling announced last week that he will be seeking re-election as Lieutenant Governor in 2009 instead of campaigning for Governor in light of personal and professional reasons. He described the position as Lieutenant Governor as a part time position and that his commitments to family and the insurance business that he began five years ago would suffer as a result of the “all consuming campaign for governor.” Local area news media which could not make the press conference in Richmond were granted a conference call interview with the Lieutenant Governor.
The media included local radio stations, newspaper and on line media, such as BristowEnews.com. Some of questions involved whether or not Lieutenant Governor Bolling consulted with the Republican Party prior to making his election announcement and the other potential candidates for Lt. Governor; who the potential candidates for Attorney General could be; was running against Attorney General Bob McDonnell a consideration in his decision; what did the Lt. Governor think about the General Assembly and their combining language about mental health and gun shows in recent bills with respect to the last year’s Virginia Tech tragedy; his work on his VA 100 Ideas and illegal immigration in Virginia.
Lieutenant Governor Bolling stressed that a lot of the initiatives that were part of his VA100 Ideas Campaign or blueprint for building a better Virginia, were introduced into legislation, such as education and mental health reform and that he and Attorney General Bob McDonnell will be looking using these ideas during their campaign together in 2009. Lieutenant Governor Bolling believes that they are well positioned politically for this campaign and they have a strong agenda in place. One of Lieutenant Governor Bolling’s top priorities for Virginia is to reform education so that we can compete in the global market of the twenty-first century and he thinks this is at the forefront of everyone’s thoughts. Public Safety is the second priority right now with the rise of gangs and sexual predators and transportation is the third priority which Virginia continues to struggle with.
