Cuccinelli Attends Mental Health Bill SigningPreventative Measures Respond to Virginia Tech Shooting

Fairfax, Virginia, April 10, 2008  – Virginia State Senator Ken Cuccinelli (R-37th) on Wednesday attended Governor Timothy Kaine’s ceremonial signing of new Mental Health System reform legislation.

Among the measures signed by the Governor were three bills (SB636, SB81 & SB336) sponsored by Senator Cuccinelli and two omnibus measures (SB246 & HB 499) containing several initiatives Mr. Cuccinelli has worked on over the last several years. This year’s budget bill also includes a much needed increase in funding for departments that address issues related to mental health.

“I have always believed that helping those who, through no fault of their own, are unable to care for themselves, is among our most important responsibilities,” Cuccinelli commented. “Today’s legislation is a great first step to meeting those responsibilities,” he continued.

Cuccinelli’s legal experience includes work in Virginia’s involuntary commitment process. The Fairfax Senator has been working closely with consumers, providers and advocates for affected families to reform Virginia’s mental health system since shortly after he was elected. Cuccinelli is considered the Virginia Senate’s member expert on mental health issues.
