Fifty Families walked the trails and visited twelve nature stations throughout Nokesville Park and learned about bugs, trees, birds, watershed conservation, streams, and stars. Children received a stamp in their activity book for each station completed and at the end each family received a prize for learning about nature. Activities included bug and bird identification, plant rubbings, printing with rubber fish, making binoculars, finding what doesn’t belong in the woods, listening to star stories and learning about the watershed. The stream exploration was a favorite with the children where they could catch a fish or tadpole and put it back or see underwater snails.
Families were given beautiful nature themed goodie bags filled with stickers, information about conservation, preservation, as well as their own personal bug observation kits. The Prince William Soil and Water Conservation District sponsored the Family Nature Adventure for area residents at Nokesville Park on Saturday July 26th with funding provided by the Prince William County Watershed Management Branch and the Chesapeake Bay License Plate Grant. Volunteers and organizations came from the Rappahannock Astronomy Club, Prince William Conservation Alliance, Prince William Gypsy Moth and Mosquito Control, Virginia Cooperative Extension-Prince William, Master Gardener Volunteers, the Virginia Department of Forestry, Backyard Boutique and many other community volunteers.
