Sixty-Two Children From Across Virginia Depart Richmond Boys & Girls Club for ‘Badges for Baseball’ Camp
RICHMOND – Attorney General Bob McDonnell will greet Virginia children participating in the “Badges for Baseball” program as they depart for the Cal Ripken Academy on Monday, August 18, at_10_a.m. They will leave from the Boys & Girls Club of Metro Richmond Central Unit, at 2601 Kensington Ave. in Richmond.
“Badges for Baseball” was created by the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation, as a community crime prevention initiative. Partly funded by the U.S. Department of Justice, the program reaches out to at-risk youth and teaches them about teamwork, character, integrity, and leadership.
Attorney General Bob McDonnell’s Office partnered with the Ripken Foundation and the Virginia Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs to offer the first statewide “Badges for Baseball” program. In this year-long program, volunteer law enforcement professionals and local Boys & Girls Clubs staff mentor and coach youth across the Commonwealth.
Participating children will meet in Richmond to board buses for the camp, located on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay in Aberdeen, MD. The children are from the metro Richmond area (including Petersburg), the greater Hampton Roads area (including the Peninsula and Norfolk), the Northern Neck, and Danville.
