July 3rd through 5th was the National Right to Life Committee Convention, held at the Crystal City Hyatt in Alexandria, Virginia. The National Right to Life is the nation’s largest pro-life group that works to protect human life threatened by abortion, infanticide and euthanasia.[1] The National Right to Life Committee was founded in 1973 as a non-partisan, non-sectarian federation of 50 state affiliates, made up of approximately 3,000 local chapters.[2] Virginia Attorney General Bob McDonnell gave special welcome remarks to many participants and organizations from across the United States, about Virginia being a Pro Life State.
Attorney General Bob McDonnell stated that with the help and attention of pro lifers, Virginia has been able to usher in an unprecedented number of new laws in the last decade to help protect the unborn:
· Parental consent
· Parental notification laws
· Informed consent, so the woman has a right to know about what decisions she is going to make.
· Ban on partial birth abortion
· Ban on human cloning
· Ban on assisted suicide
These are some of the victories that we have been fortunate to have in Virginia because people have cared enough not only to understand an issue but to get off their couch to come to Richmond and lobby the legislators day and night to make a difference. Attorney General Bob McDonnell saluted pro life orders and said it is an extraordinary thing what all the pro life organizations have done to turn Virginia around and make it a pro life state.
Attorney General Bob McDonnell emphasized the importance of elections and how much they matter. It is important to have people appointed in the Supreme Court that understood what the founders meant in the Constitution and the Declaration. Attorney General pointed out the flurry of activity of five to four decisions in just this past week in the Supreme Court and in particular upholding the federal ban on partial birth abortion which the Attorney General is using in Virginia because of their good work, to file a repeal and review of the partial birth abortion ban.
He said that elections matter because they determine who has the power to make decisions in statutes and legislative centers all across the country. While the federal elections are important, ultimately all the decisions made on the issue of abortion are made in the state legislatures. He joked that “Virginia is for Lovers,” but that it should say “Virginia is for Lovers of Elections,” because we have at least one or two a year. The policy makers with the votes are the ones who determine whether or not Virginia is a Pro Life state and that protections are given to the unborn. “Welcome to Virginia and I am proud that you are here. I hope you not only get knowledge of the law but you reinvigorate the passion across here today and that you not only know and understand why it is important, but how you can make a difference in your legislatures, city councils, and courts of America to truly make a difference in standing up for this fundamental “Right to Life” that we celebrate 232 years of recognition of in America. God bless you and thanks for being here.”
