Fairfax, Virginia, June 26, 2008 – In a statement released today, Republican State Senator and Attorney General Candidate Ken Cuccinelli praised today's Supreme Court ruling in DC v. Heller.
"Today the Supreme Court did the right thing when it acknowledged that the 2nd Amendment protects the right of individuals to keep and bear arms," said Cuccinelli, the leading advocate for 2nd Amendment rights in the Virginia Senate. "This case represents a monumental day in the history of America; the Freedoms protected in the Constitution have finally been restored to the law-abiding citizens of Washington, D.C."
In a 5 to 4 decision, Justice Antonin Scalia wrote for the Majority that enshrining the right to bear arms in the Constitution excludes the "absolute prohibition of handguns held and used for self-defense in the home."
"For a lawyer who loves Constitutional Law and is a strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment, attending the oral argument in this case was a quite a privilege," said Cuccinelli who was present at the March 18th argument before the Supreme Court. "I am glad that the Court has established, once and for all, that the 2nd Amendment is an individual right – the bulwark for liberty the founders intended it to be."
"It's also important to note that this ruling continues to prohibit felons and the mentally ill from owning firearms," added Cuccinelli.
