Delegate Bob Marshall spoke with BristowEnews.com about how he originally became involved in Virginia politics, and the top issues facing Virginia. Currently Bob Marshall is running for the U. S. Senate race in Virginia. For more information about his campaign and the issues visit http://bobmarshall2008.com
He never intended to run in Virginia politics but started off working on a cross county road project in Prince William County, which proposed widening Davis Ford Road. He said that project would have involved moving approximately one hundred and twenty-five residents out of their existing homes and would have ended up costing a lot of money. Bob Marshall, along with three other people on the advisory committee thought that there had to be a better solution. It ended up that the County Supervisor liked their proposal and Bob thought he was finished with politics.
When the redistricting came up around 1991, Bob was trying to find somebody to run who had similar views, experience and the willingness to run. Since nobody was running for the ticket, Bob consulted with his wife about running and ended up winning the Republican primary as well as the election for Delegate. He has won every election since then.
In response to the question of what are the three top issues facing Virginia today, one of the top priorities for Bob Marshall is fixing the transportation and mass transit issues that face the major population areas of both Northern Virginia and the Tide Water regions. Currently Richmond has seniority on the money and the road commissions and they have built themselves an extensive road system. The road system is lightly used in Richmond in comparison to Northern Virginia, however Bob believes with the upcoming census in 2010, the population shifts will finally be recognized in the general assembly and Northern Virginia and the Tide Water Region will finally be recognized to receive priority in funding for roads, schools, etc.
As Bob Marshall makes his run for the U.S. 2008 Senate race one of the top local as well as national issues is illegal immigration. Bob has successfully formed a commission to study the issue with local and state agencies, as well as citizens involved in different aspects of this issue. Members of the commission include Senators Watkins, and Saslaw, as well as Delegates Todd Gilbert, Jackson Miller and Dwight Jones. The commission is currently looking at the interaction of illegal immigrants within the state and then the commission will hold public forums allowing residents to testify and address illegal immigration. Currently citizens can view the draft of the minutes of the commissions meetings on line at: http://www.hhr.virginia.gov/Initiatives/ImmigrationCommission/01-04-08/01-04-08_Minutes.pdf The commission is collecting data in order to produce a report and make recommendations to the State of Virginia and the Federal Government. They would like to lower citizen concerns about illegal immigration.
Another important issue specifically related to Northern Virginia is the question of the proposed power lines that is currently under review with the State Corporation Commission. Bob Marshall noted that he was the only U.S. Senate candidate that testified in Arlington with the Department of Energy. To Bob Marshall’s knowledge no other candidate, Mark Warner or Jim Gilmore, submitted information about this issue which is the result of the Federal Government’s law giving imminent domain to out of state power companies without regard to the State of Virginia’s own Corporation Commission's review and authorization. This law also disregard’s park land and the historical significance of the area and gives out of state power companies a blank tablet to do whatever they want. Bob Marshall states that as a U.S. Senator he will work to change that, especially since Virginia was given no notice about the power lines. Bob Marshall has spoken to the attorney general about the due process of the law and that the state should file suit.
Bob states that one of the reasons he is running for the U. S. Senate in 2008 is because America is in a process of dissolution. The United States is losing its sovereignty, capital, wealth, and jobs. We are importing more than we export. In addition to protecting America from terrorist groups who dictate how Congress should spend money, the United States needs to focus on protecting our own borders from criminals who freely enter our country For more information on Bob Marshall’s views on important issues visit http://bobmarshall2008.com
