Prince William County–Greater Manassas Chamber of Commerce

Two Shelley Krasnow Community Service awards presented

Manassas, VA— All one hundred and fifty people attending the Community Showcase Luncheon on February 26th held their breath as Colleen Quattlebaum, Idearc Media Inc. - Official Publisher of Verizon Print Directories announced the names of this year’s Shelley Krasnow Community Service Award winners: Capital Hospice and Micron Technology Virginia’s K-12 Education Outreach Program.

The Shelley Krasnow Community Service Award is an annual award presented to nonprofit community service organizations by the Prince William County–Greater Manassas Chamber of Commerce. The Shelley Krasnow Community Service Award is named for Mr. Shelley Krasnow, a past Chamber chair and philanthropist dedicated to the service of others. Each recipient receives a check for $1,000 and a plaque to display in their offices. Their name is also engraved on a plaque which hangs in the Chamber office. This year’s awards were sponsored by Idearc Media Inc. - Official Publisher of Verizon Print Directories.

The two recipients were selected from a field of 35 organizations or programs that were nominated by members of the community. The Greater Chamber’s Community Relations Committee then read and scored the nominations based on a list of criteria to arrive at two finalists.

The Capital Hospice award was accepted by Rev. Carolyn S. Richar, Regional Manager and Julie Weatherington, Community Outreach Coordinator.  Capital Hospice care is about living well with serious, progressive illness.  Their doctors, nurses, aides, medical social workers, and chaplains – compassionate professionals with specialized training in pain and symptom management – come to the patient wherever he or she resides – in a private home or apartment, nursing home, or assisted living community - and provide education and support for the caregiver, as well. As a nonprofit, community-based resource for more than 30 years, Capital Hospice does not turn anyone away for lack of insurance or resources to pay for their care.

Susan Jacobs with Assist-2-Sell Jacobs Team Buyers & Sellers Realty and former Greater Chamber Chairman wrote in her nomination form, “When my mom had approximately 3 to 4 months left before she died of cancer, Capital Hospice was there to assist not only her but the entire family. Although my mom stayed very active until she died – Hospice continued to come and spend hours with her, just talking and giving her comfort.”

Capital Hospice will use the award to provide patient care for those who lack resources and to support its Point of Hope Camp, a healing weekend retreat for grieving children, teens and adults.

The award to Micron Technology Virginia’s K-12 Education Outreach Program was accepted by Denyse Carroll, K-12 Program Administrator for Micron Technology Virginia.

Micron's K-12 Program includes a wide variety of activities conducted with students and educators to promote and encourage science, technology, engineering, and math.  The program has been designed to excite elementary-grade students by providing hands-on science lessons that are related to the Standards of Learning (SOLs), challenge middle school students with science problems and mentor high school students preparing to enter technical careers.

Not only does Micron design programs for school children, it is also involved in providing schools with the resources it needs to help children learn. In the fall of 2007, Micron organized a 3-week long school supply drive that netted enough in cash and school supplies to fully load 100 backpacks which were donated to Jennie Dean Elementary School in the city of Manassas and West Gate Elementary School, part of the Prince William County Public School System.

“We wanted all the kids to be able to start school at the same place” commented Denyse.

Denyse plans to use the award for podcasting research so that the foundation can eventually make videos and hands-on activities used in classrooms available to every educator and student in the Commonwealth of Virginia and beyond.
