Based on a book called “The Small Woman”, the “Inn of Sixth Happiness” is about Englishwoman Gladys Aylward, who desires to work as a missionary in China during World War II.  Rejected as unqualified, she works as a maid to earn money to send herself via train across Russia.  Finally in China she works with an experienced older missionary woman named Jeannie Lawson, fixing up the Inn, learning to speak Mandarin so she can tell Bible stories to people traveling on the donkey trains that travel to remote villages.  She soon discovers the brutality of Chinese laws but stands determined with her faith in God.

When the accidental death of the elder missionary leaves her with the decision to stay or go back to England, she decides to carry on her mission as a “foot inspector,” for the local government so she can earn money for the inn, but at the same time she wins the hearts of the people in the rugged mountain villages and earns a Chinese name that means “the one who loves.”  Even the prisoners know her when she comes to stop a prison riot by herself.

The acting and the filming are stunning.  Although shot in Wales you feel that you are in China!  The actors are outstanding in conveying the story and emotions, especially the love that grows between Gladys and Eurasion military commander Lin.  Without the help of modern special effects the actors grasp your attention to the details of the heroic lives of the Chinese people during the Japanese invasion, especially Gladys’ trek across the mountains to bring 100 orphaned children to safety.
