NALPP is an eight-week English program that focuses on language skills needed to become successful in the nurse aide field. Nurse aides give hands on care in nursing homes, assisted living facilities and home health care arrangements. NALPP is for individuals who speak English as a Second Language at an intermediate level and are interested in a career in the nursing field. It is a language preparatory class and not the nurse aide coursework. Priority will be given to individuals who are interested in completing a nurse aide program during the next year.
The upcoming session of classes will begin on April 22 and will be held every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. Language skill curriculum concentrating on medical terminology and concepts has been developed by volunteer, Patty Davis RN, BSN and state certified nurse aide instructor, using the BEACON class infrastructure. “This class is being offered to help potential CNA students not be overwhelmed with the terms when they get accepted into a nurse aide program,” said Davis.
The pilot program ran March through June, 2006 with sixteen registrants and eight graduates. Four of the graduates have become certified nurse aides (CNA) and one of the four has steadily moved up through the nurse aide career ladder.
The program is free; all materials and instruction will be provided at no cost to the student. We only ask that you commit to attending all sixteen classes. BEACON will award a Certificate of Achievement upon completion of all requirements of the eight-week class. This certificate can then be included in an enrollment package to a nurse aide program.
