Today is the 28th August 2008
Memorial Day commemorates the fallen soldiers of long ago who died in the battlefields and meadows of Manassas Battlefield Park, Manassas, Virginia. The 42nd Virginia Infantry Regiment Re-enactors and the 14th Brooklyn Company provided the audience a glimmer of the past where brothers from the opposite realm suffered insurmountable defeat and casualties both in body and spirit. It is in this day soldiers from the past are remembered for their selfless acts so a nation that was once separated by ideology can be sewed together into a single weave of fabric which is now the present day United States of America.

Happy 1st Birthday Bristowenews.com!
Today officially marks the 1st anniversary of the online magazine. It’s been quite a learning curve. And along the way we have developed internal processes and procedures for writing and publishing articles for the residents of Bristow, Gainesville, and Nokesville, Virginia. Among other things we have accomplished last year is migrating the blog-like new magazine into a full fledged and customized Web Frame application. Our publishing time was cut down in half as a result of the application we developed internally. We also integrated web statistics and on occasionally check our web site traffic. We average about 12-20k hits per week depending on the story, time of the month, and generally consider it atypical cyclical. For instance our site was overloaded during the last November 2007 Virginia Senate election. We typically average about 1.5-2k unique URLS in a given month, and looking through our stats generally find interesting stuff people look for and sometimes base our stories on them.

NORTHERN VIRGINIA—The Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative received the Pro Patria Award from the Virginia Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Committee on May 17, 2008 at Fort Belvoir, Va. The Cooperative also has been nominated for the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award.
Both awards, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense, represent the highest recognition of employers who demonstrate exceptional support for the nation’s defense by adopting personnel policies that make it easier for their employees to participate in the National Guard and Reserve components of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard. Staff Sergeant Gerald Gardner, a NOVEC line technician, nominated the Cooperative for both awards while he was deployed in Iraq in 2007 and 2008.
According to ESGR, the Pro Patria Award (“for the country” in Latin), “symbolizes uncommon patriotism by an employer.” Charles Quillin, ESGR Virginia state chair, said: “Supportive employers are critical to maintaining the strength and readiness of the nation's Guard and Reserve.”

Prince William County Department of Public Works and the Historic Preservation Division hosted a fabulous “Farm Day” for local area residents and their children on the pristine grounds of the Brentsville Courthouse Historic Centre. Children were invited to learn about 19th century farm skills through activities such as candle dipping, butter making, carding wool, pounding corn and open hearth cooking. The activities took place near the “Haislip-Hall House” which was originally located in Braemar off Vint Hill Road and was moved to the Brentsville Courthouse location in 2000. The restoration of the “Haislip-Hall House” was completed in 2008 and included replacing the original cedar siding, constructing a porch and instillation of the fireplace and chimney, according to Prince William County. The house has a window where visitors can see the original materials used in the construction of the three room farm house that Samuel Haislip built for his wife and seven children.

News Section: Server Maintanance,May 2008 ~ Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
May is the official Asian Pacific American (APA) month in the United States and like the Black History and Women's history celebrations, the APA came to be as a result of congressional bill.
The initial bill was drafted and approved in June 1977. It was introduced by Representatives Frank Horton and Norman Mineta to proclaim the 1st ten days in May as the Asian Pacific American month, in addition, Senator Daniel Inouye and Spark Matsunaga introduced a similar bill which proclaimed the Asian Pacific American month. On October 5, 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a joint resolution and recognized this annual celebration.
In 1990, President George H. Bush eventually designated May to be Asian Pacific Heritage Month because it commemorated the immigration of the 1st Japanese to the United States in 1843, and marks the completion of the Transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants/Chinese Americans.

"Bolling criticizes Kaine for relentlessly trying to raise taxes on Virginia's families"
RICHMOND - Earlier today, Governor Tim Kaine released details of his latest transportation funding proposal, which will be considered by the General Assembly during a Special Session on June 23, 2008. In response to the Governor's proposal, Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling issued the following statement:
"Since he took office in 2006, Governor Kaine has relentlessly tried to raise taxes on Virginia's families to generate additional funding for transportation, even though such tax increases are unnecessary and are not supported by the vast majority of the people of Virginia. The Governor's most recent transportation proposal is just the latest chapter in this never ending saga and I seriously doubt that it will be well received by Republicans in the General Assembly or the people of Virginia.
“While there is never a good time to raise taxes, I am also concerned by the fact that the Governor and Democrats in the General Assembly want to raise taxes by over one billion dollars at a time when economic growth is slowing, fuel and food costs are skyrocketing, and working Virginians are having a harder time making ends meet. Increasing taxes now will unnecessarily hurt the economy and kill needed jobs. In addition, Governor Kaine’s tax increase plan is regressive and will hurt those least able to pay the most, including senior citizens on a fixed income and young families.”

Bristow, VA.
On May 6, 2008, the Prince William County Board of County Supervisor (BOCS) voted unanimously to the development and construction of commercial properties across from the Historic Bristoe Battle Station along the scenic byways for commercial business ventures. In addition, the re-zoning of a small parcel of land between Devlin and Linton Hall for a drive through Pharmacy, a daycare, and a small office complex has been approved.
According to BOCS, the approval meant additional revenue stream for the county. We all agree the local economy has slowed down in the past year and a lot of home owners particularly in Prince William County side have been hit hard by housing foreclosures. So my question to local residents is this construction really going to stimulate our local economy? The fact is our local economy hasn't snapped out of this economic doldrums leads me to believe we may be in this economic stalemate for a little longer than what we all have anticipated.

Manassas, VA—Uno’s Chicago Grill in Gainesville was the venue for the first mixer held by the Young Professionals of Northern Virginia last Thursday evening. Young Professionals of Northern Virginia (YPNOVA) is a new group recently organized by the Prince William County–Greater Manassas Chamber of Commerce in order to attract and retain future leadership–those who are currently under the age of forty-one.
The group was organized to help young business people create relationships that foster personal development and a personal commitment to the community. Research shows that when young professionals feel themselves to be a part a community with the power and opportunity to impact it, they are twice as likely to remain in that position. In fact, three out of four young professionals under the age of 28 place more importance on the quality of their community than the availability of jobs.
