NORTHERN VIRGINIA—The Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative won five awards in May 2008 for two advertisements, two articles and a PowerPoint presentation.

Summit International Awards

Summit International Awards selected as its bronze winner a NOVEC television ad created by the Cooperative’s public relations department and CMT Advertising called “The Value of Electricity.”  SIA selected the entry from thousands of ads submitted from 25 countries.

The 2008 Board of Judges came from international advertising and marketing firms. SIA said, “Discriminating critics were highly impressed with your company’s creativity.”

Spotlight on Excellence Awards

The Council of Rural Electric Communicators and the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association selected four NOVEC entries from more than 910 submissions for Spotlight on Excellence awards.

Faculty members from the University of Missouri, University of North Carolina, and the University of Southern Mississippi judged the entries.  One judge said, “In quality of writing, clarity of presentation, and level of creativity these professionals are excelling at serving the people with whom they are communicating.”

Communication Specialist Priscilla Knight received an Award of Excellence in the Best News Story category for “High Heat Makes Electricity Usage Soar: High Demand Sets New NOVEC Record.” Knight wrote the August 9, 2007 news release when the outdoor temperature topped 100 degrees F.

Knight also won an Award of Merit in the Best Feature Story category for “Joe Bernard’s World War II Silver Star.”  Bernard is a NOVEC customer-owner who lives in Gainesville, Va.  The full story about fighting and surviving a dogfight in a B-17 Flying Fortress will be reprinted in the June 2008 Cooperative Living magazine.

Communications Manager Inia Burginger and CMT Advertising won an Award of Merit in the Best Individual Ad category.  Their advertisement honored a NOVEC line technician serving with the Virginia National Guard in Iraq and other employees who have served in the military.

Graphic Designer Nina Cosgriff won an Award of Merit for NOVEC’s 2007 annual meeting PowerPoint presentation.  The presentation included colorful custom animations and graphics, maps, and financial graphs.

The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, the service organization representing the national interests of cooperative electric utilities, coordinates the Council of Rural Electric Communicators.  The annual Spotlight awards competition recognizes top-rated communication and marketing efforts by electric cooperatives and related organizations.

NOVEC is a not-for-profit corporation that distributes electricity and energy services to approximately 140,000 customers in Fairfax, Fauquier, Loudoun, Prince William, Stafford and Clarke counties, and the City of Manassas Park, making it one of the largest electric distribution cooperatives in the nation.
