Brentsville Courthouse Farm Day May 17th

Prince William County Department of Public Works and the Historic Preservation Division hosted a fabulous “Farm Day” for local area residents and their children on the pristine grounds of the Brentsville Courthouse Historic Centre.  Children were invited to learn about 19^th century farm skills through activities such as candle dipping, butter making, carding wool, pounding corn and open hearth cooking.  The activities took place near the “Haislip-Hall House” which was originally located in Braemar off Vint Hill Road and was moved to the Brentsville Courthouse location in 2000.  The restoration of the “Haislip-Hall House” was completed in 2008 and included replacing the original cedar siding, constructing a porch and instillation of the fireplace and chimney, according to Prince William County. The house has a window where visitors can see the original materials used in the construction of the three room farm house that Samuel Haislip built for his wife and seven children.

The Brentsville Courthouse grounds include buildings such as the old jail, which has not yet been restored, the Presbyterian Church, the one-room Brentsville School and the Hatcher Baptist Church.  The Brentsville Courthouse is open for tours on Saturdays from noon until 4:00 p.m.  Long time residents Kay and Morgan Breeden volunteer at the courthouse and visitor’s center giving tours and information about the buildings.  Families can picnic on the beautiful grounds or walk on the small but steep trail which follows around the grounds.  Brentsville Courthouse is a local area historical treasure that should not be missed!
