The Prince William Soil and Water Conservation District is having a tree seedling sale and they are taking seedling pre-orders from now until Oct. 17th which is the last day to pre-order. The varieties included are: Arrowwood Viburnum, Black Gum, Blueberry Highbush, Chinese Dogwood, Elderberry, Persimmon, Pin Oak, Red-Osier Dogwood, Redbud, Sassafras, Sweetbay Magnolia, Sycamore, Tulip Poplar, Virginia Pine, Willow Oak, and Witch-Hazel. It is recommended that you purchase tree tubes and stakes for your seedlings to protect them and enhance their growth.

The Lavender Ladies of Catlett's Seven Oaks Lavender Farm, mother and daughter farm team, Edith and Deborah Williamson will give a twenty minute talk on Sat. August 16th at 10 AM. They will discuss their experiences raising lavender, its many benefits and uses, and their method of developing a niche or boutique type farm business. Containers will be available this Sunday, August 10th, from 10 am to 3 pm for local citizens to dispose of Household Hazardous and Electronic Waste materials at the local Composting Facility located on Balls Ford Road. As of July 13th, Prince William County Department of Public Works made it easier for residents in Bristow, Gainesville and Nokesville, Virginia to dispose of the following electronics with a maximum of 3 items per household:
-Computers (CPU), notebook/laptop, monitors, keyboards, mouse, etc.
-Small printers and inkjet copiers, fax machines, and scanners (cartridges must be removed)
-Televisions, including picture tube, projection LCD and plasma types
-VCR’s, DC/DVD players, stereos (no speakers)
-Telephones and cellular phones
-Computer cables and cords, chips and cards, and miscellaneous circuit boards
Residents are encouraged to visit the Prince William County website, http://www.pwcgov.org/recyclerefuse where they can learn about their program S.T.O.P, which stands for Stop Throwing Out Pollutants. The Balls Ford Road Compost Facility is located at 13000 Balls Ford Road, near its intersection with Wellington Road, in Manassas.
Yankey Farms, a very local farm and vendor with the Nokesville Farmers' Market is taking immediate bulk special orders for tomatoes for canning and freezing. The Environmental and Natural Resources Program of the Prince William Cooperative Extension is sponsoring a free program on fall lawn care with lectures by Dr. Mike Goatley, a Virginia Tech Turf grass Specialist and Dr. Shawn Askew, a Virginia Tech Weed Specialist. The House of Mercy located at 10043 Nokesville Road will be having a yard sale on August 2nd from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. where everything is just $1.00 no matter what the item! Donuts and coffee will be available. The House of Mercy is an apostolate of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and provides food, clothing as well as emergency financial assistance for those in need within the community. Prince William Soil and Water Conservation District is sponsoring a nature adventure for families at Nokesville Park on Saturday, July 26th, from 6 to 8 p.m. rain or shine. The cost is $10 for Prince William County residents and $20 for non-Prince William County residents. Free treats and prizes are available for every family but pre-registration is required. BEACON for Adult Literacy offers a quarterly Life Skills Series focusing on a number of topics each year. On Wednesday, July 16 BEACON for Adult Literacy will host a Disaster Preparedness Workshop at the Georgetown South Community Center, 9444 Taney Road, Manassas, VA 20110 from 11:45 am – 1:00 pm. Presented by Bonnie Nahas of the Voluntary Action Center of Greater Prince William County, attendees will participate in an interactive program focusing on the creation of a household plan for safety in the case of fire, evacuation and extreme weather. Guests will learn what information to include in your plan, how to stock a disaster supply kit, pet care considerations and resources for further reference. The workshop is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be available. Local Bristow residents and authors, Art and Laraine Bennett will be giving the last “Parenting Series” talk based on their book, “The Temperament God Gave You.” The talk will be about “Motivating our Kids by Understanding their Temperaments” and will be held at Holy Trinity Church at approximately 11:30, (after the 10:30 Mass,) on Sunday, June 22nd in the classroom. NORTHERN VIRGINIA—Virginia Delegate David Poisson presented the Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative with a copy of House Joint Resolution No. 399 commending and congratulating NOVEC for 25 years of service to Northern Virginia. Poisson presented the resolution passed by the General Assembly to NOVEC President/CEO Stan Feuerberg at the Cooperative’s headquarters in Manassas, Va., on June 12, 2008.
Poisson, who represents District 32 in Loudoun County, said, “Northern Virginia has seen unprecedented growth in the last 25 years. Much of that growth has been in NOVEC territory. The General Assembly recognizes how NOVEC has met increased energy demands with remarkable reliability.”

NORTHERN VIRGINIA—The Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative is asking its customer-owners and Washington, D.C., area residents to donate money to its home heating assistance program, Operation Round Up. ORU helps thousands of disadvantaged people in Northern Virginia pay their heating bills.As of January 1, 2008, ORU had given $29,000 to six county and social service organizations that provide energy assistance. “With our neighbors’ help, we’re trying to increase that donation to $50,000 for this heating season,” says Donna Snellings, NOVEC’s ORU administrator.
