Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day

The beginning of Valentine’s Day and how it came to be continues to be a mystery. Archaeologist have discovered the remains of a Roman catacomb believed to be the remains of Valentine, a real person who was executed during the reign of Claudius, a Roman Emperor who viciously persecuted early Christians. The story of Valentine tells a story of man who was caught marrying Christian couples and aiding run-away Christians who were under persecution during Emperor Claudius’ reign. Valentine was caught, bound, and imprisoned. However, his gentle demeanor attracted the likings of his fellow prisoners and led to conversions of many including an attempt to convert the Emperor. He was eventually stoned, beaten, and put to death. While he was awaiting his execution he restored the sight of his jailer’s daughter and on the night before his execution he penned a farewell note to his jailer’s daughter signing it, “From your Valentine”. In 496 AD, Pope Gelasius marked February 14th as a celebration in honor of his martyrdom.
